What Is a King Worthy Of?
I'm tired of running
Constantly searching
My heart is yearning
For what only You can give
I'm desperate for water
Unlike any other
Let this drought be over
Lord I'm dying to live
I surrender I surrender
All or nothing
I give myself to You
I surrender I surrender
All or nothing
I give myself to YouLord here is my life
I lay it all down
I'd rather have Jesus
All of the treasures
Could never measure
Just give me Jesus“I Surrender” by Red Worship & Lizzie Morgan
The very first time I read Psalm 63, it sent me on a spiral, with no end in sight. “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.” (Psalm 63:1-4 ESV)
This psalm scared me as a new believer. I was confused by how someone could long for anything that deeply. I thought, What kind of love is better than life? If that is the motivation of David’s praise, what is this God all about? Do I have to love God more than life too? What I did not realize upon my first read was that, once all God has done and all He has to offer is truly realized, one cannot help but love God more than anything. The more you know Him, the more in awe of Him you become.
Now, if you know a little bit of my story, you know that life wasn’t all that precious to me in the first place. Naturally, this disposition peaked my curiosity for what was declared in this psalm as “better.” Your dissatisfaction with life may not be to the same degree as it was for me (and I praise God for that!), but I know that there is something in all of us that craves more.
You may have everything you could ever want out of life, but it will never completely satisfy you. There’s a reason why there are countless tragedies of celebrities who end their lives, even though they seem to “have it all.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God has “set eternity in the human heart.” This is meant to be a sign of something greater than ourselves! This reality points us toward God, His goodness, His promises, and the life and joy found in Him.
We can only sing songs like “I Surrender” and recite passages of scripture like Psalm 63 once we have seen what the world has to offer, and can recognize that it is worth nothing if we don’t have Jesus. David’s declaration of God’s steadfast (firm, unwavering, immovable) love being better than life stems directly from His personal experience.
David knew God. He prioritized spending time with God, and the love of God was David’s greatest treasure. This love prepared him to be king without idolizing the throne. He knew that all of the treasures the kingdom could offer could never compare to what the True King freely gives.
To declare God as our greatest hope, joy, desire, and treasure is our best attempt in reciprocating how He viewed us when He was crucified on our behalf. Hebrews 12:2 says that there was a joy set before Jesus as He endured the cross. That joy was a restored relationship with us.
Jesus submitted to being flogged, spat on, mocked, and murdered so that we would, through His resurrection, see God for who He really is — worthy. He is worthy of our love. He is worthy of our awe. He is worthy of our lives. He proved this by giving His own. In response, He asks us to give the same.
Acknowledging His worthiness sets us in right, humble standing as His children, and it comes with a whole lot of goodness and mercy, here and in heaven. Joy, freedom, purpose, and so much more awaits you on the other side of surrender. Don’t take my word for it, though. Come and see.
