Hey! I’m Simone. I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, and I grew up in a blended family with six siblings and a cat. Much of my time was spent in a Black Baptist church on the Eastside of the city. I started singing in the choir at the age of three, and started hating it around the age of 15. I went from being a mere theist to falling in love with Jesus when I was 19. In the middle of the New England woods, in a poorly set-up tent, I gave my life to Jesus while reading the Gospel of Mark. (I am not a backpacker, but I was desperate to get away.) The only reason I began singing “church music” again was because I realized Jesus loved it, and He is worthy of receiving whatever He loves. This made me become very fond of how worship can transform a heart, and soon after that, I felt called to be a worship pastor.

Growing up on gospel music, it took a while for me to enjoy even one CCM song. For months, my worship did not consist of me singing along in Christian gatherings. Rather, I’d stare at a screen and pray the words of songs I had never heard before. The lyrics helped me find awe in the God who made me, and that awe prompted me to sing. This blog will consist of lyrics, poetry, and scripture passages that have captivated my heart. It is my prayer that the beauty of the gospel, found in the simplest things, will help you to worship to any song that glorifies God, regardless of whether or not it appeals to your music taste or familiarity. Psalm 22:3 says that God inhabits the praises of His people. Don’t you want to be wherever He inhabits? The God of the universe tells you where to find Him. Draw close. He’s waiting for you.

“I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown Me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”

(Luke 7:47 NLT)

Worshiping through song is one of the primary ways that we can glorify God. This action alone helps us to remember that God has forgiven us for MUCH, not little. Therefore, we should show Him much adoration. Worship and prayer not only act as incense before God (Psalm 141:2), but it reorients our hearts toward what really matters — being in right relationship with our Father, receiving His love, and loving Him back. We cannot love Him fully when we forget that which we have been forgiven.

The purpose of Forgiven Much is to gradually aid in heightening the corporate, ritualistic, Sunday morning worship experience into one that is also personal and intimate. Whether or not you are a person who can connect with God easily through song, the hope is that this blog will help tie worship songs to scripture and experience.

A lifestyle of worship is more than seeking what will please our ears, but an every-moment acknowledgment of God’s goodness. May this help you to draw near and worship Him in spirit and in truth.

“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him in that way.”

(John 4:23 NLT)
